Social Networking -- past, present, and future

Room:
Blue (#0000FF)
time:
Sat 4 pm

I'm fascinated by all the social networks available, and I'd like to have a session to talk about what has happened, what is happening now, and what the social networks OF THE FUTURE might be like...

I'm no expert -- which is what BarCamp is about -- and if you want to present something, that is great -- I am mainly proposing it because I want to attend and learn something from such a session. I'll facilitate the discussion and organize it loosely around the sequence: tales of the past, what is going on in the present, and ideas of the future.

I've come to know--through people in web414 and BarCampMilwaukee--networks such as facebook, meetup, flickr, twitter, yelp, panoramio, metroproper, pownce, OKCupid, linkedin, mySpace, ziki, upcoming, friendster, hi5.com, orkut, tribe, live, del.icio.us, tumblr, zorpia, familylink, outside.in, and more.

I'm looking to gather people with interest, experience, or passion for this area, not just from the technical side, but mainly from the social/cultural/user side. I'm particularly fascinated with the hypothesis that social and online networking can lead to or support in-person networking. Also, tales from the past: many of the Ancient Geeks used social networking tools like IRC and Usenet. What has become of them? What of the future?

i want to add to the milieu of niche social networking sites. i know the tech exists and i want to put out a new brand. but how do i connect with the technology ppl and convince them to build it for me? i'm looking forward to the conversation since there's so much i don't know. i'm not a techie. i'm a "marketer" or sorts...

Techie

There are a myriad of Open Source CMS / Social-Networking softwares lurking about the net, and many of them are easy to implement. I plan on attending the session and would be willing to offer a techie's hand after if you still have any questions. I have experience in CMS programming and would like to offer some insight into the field.

Learning from others

One of the things I'm looking forward to learning about social media is specificially how folks use these for business contacts. I think each one mentioned has it's own good and bad points. It'd be great to learn from each other about the most effective points of each one, as well as any to steer completely clear of.

Looking forward to it

This should be a very lively discussion. Looking forward to it.

and i'm a social networking addict..

i'm also no expert.. but i can throw in my $0.02 (or more). i never got into irc or usenet. but was a part of several online message board communities, BBS, and blogging/commenting (before it was "cool")

Welcome

Tracy -- that would be great. Your input and experience is important -- particularly as you are an early adopter. Please attend. The way it will be structured is open discussion. I will facilitate the discussion, but I am not going to present anything, just sort of get and keep the discussion going.

Good Topic

Just a warning, the "How Social Can You Get?" session at BarCampMadison ended up going almost 2 hours. :)

There is a lot to discuss on this topic, and everyone seemed to have opinions and a story to tell. (And that's a good thing!)

Sunday

Yes, this might be a better "lazy sunday" presentation.
