When Geeks Get Creative: Tech Art
Posted September 30th, 2007 by zacwitteArt with a technologist's twist. We worship the graffiti research lab and things that glow with electrons.
“To arrive at a creative solution to a persistently unsolvable problem, an individual must often change the method by which he or she has already attempted to solve the problem—in other words, think outside the box. Observations on problem solving have included William James’ view, expressed in 1890, that the ability to switch strategies is integral to divergent thinking and Charles Spearman’s suggestion in 1931 that creativity results from bringing together two or more ideas that previously have been isolated. One way to solve a persistent problem, then, would be to see it in a "new light" by combining different forms of knowledge and cognitive strategies mediated by the two hemispheres of the brain,” (Exploring the Brain’s Role in Creativity, NeuroPsychiatry Reviews Online).
Here are some ideas I came up with so far:
Photo Walk (was: mil[photo]waukee)

hey, there's lots of cool stuff in milwaukee. lets go take pictures of some of it. k?
no photography experience needed. bring a camera, camera phone, sketch book, or just bring yourself and an appreciation of 'stuff'. this is a good chance to network with other photographers, learn cool tricks, experiment in your photography, or just get a little exercise and enjoy milwaukee's downtown.
the walk was fun, full of unexpected 'stuff'. for all who participated and have/will upload to flickr, the tag we agreed on is:
barcampmilwaukee2photowalk
the pictures already uploaded are over here
LED Throwies

Build you own LED Throwies.
Yeah, you read that correctly! We've got Throwies and we wanna share them with you.
We'll provide all the supplies to create 200 of these little beauties and you will build them - don't worry, it's easy.
And then, you will be free to do with them as you wish...
Uh-oh, wondering what the heck LED Throwies are?
See the Graffiti Research Lab or Wikipedia for more info.
(Supplies provided by the UWM Union Studio Arts and Craft Centre. Yay! )
Flickrverse and Beyond

What started as a photo-sharing tool has become so much more. What are the ramifications of the Flickr universe regarding amateur vs. professional photography, online and real-world social networking, citizen (photo) journalism, virtual and literal travelling, travelogues, mapping, art collections/curating? What can Flickr do better; do potential competitors even exist? Where might the Flickrverse take us in the future?
Second Presenter(s) welcome!
Popsicle Sticks 2.0

This will be a hands-on session where you are required to build something out of popsicle sticks.
There will probably be glue, and maybe rubber bands, and possibly a few other materials... but mainly it will be about Popsicle Sticks... 2.0!
(Update: I've got 3,000 sticks and 3 glue guns.)
And prizes. There will definitely be prizes.
