Introduction to Hobby Robotics

If you've seen BattleBots, the DARPA Grand Challenge, the DARPA Urban Challenge, FIRST or IGVC and lamented the fact that ones needs to be a student or have lots of money and free time to participate, then this session is for you. I'll introduce attendees to the essence and joy of building autonomous hobby robots as well as the hobby robot communities available for individual participation locally and across the world. We'll briefly review the myriad of skills, techniques and parts one encounters in robotics, many of which are the same as found in the aforementioned 'large' robotics events.

getting 50-500x more performance out of your computer

nVidia has been improving its general purpose programing offerings through a C-like language extension that allows you to use your graphics card for more general tasks. The latest graphics cards from nVidia have 240 stream processors to make use of. About 8 months ago we had Micheal from nVidia talking about this. AMD has also decided to adopt CUDA, and drop CTM (close to metal).

If we have the interest we should spend some time hacking on it.
